On the occasion of the 50th birthday of Queen Máxima of the Netherlands on 17 May 2021 several books have been published in the Netherlands, and one in Argentina as well. All books are quite different, but thus far has good reviews, apart from the one from Argentina.

More than Majesty) published in April 2021 by Nieuw Amsterdam, was the first of the birthday books I’ve read. The book is written by royalty-journalist Rick Evers, who has been following the royals for eleven years. One year Rick Evers followed Máxima closely and talked exclusively with Queen Máxima and the people surrounding her about her work. It offers a unique view behind the palace doors, which normally remain hermetically closed.

The publisher: “Máxima is more than the wife of King Willem-Alexander, more than a queen in beautiful dresses, with striking hats or a sparkling tiara. As a patron, advocate or honorary president, she is committed to countless organizations at home and abroad. She goes far beyond the ceremonial paths to make a difference. Based on exclusive conversations with the Queen and the people around her, Rick Evers reveals what her life looks like. Máxima appears to be a workaholic who with her work wants to reach, inspire and motivate as many people as possible. At the same time she is involved in the broad outlines and the smallest details of her husband’s kingship. She constantly balances between her work as queen and her duties as mother of three daughters. We have never come this close to Máxima.”

The photo on the cover of “Máxima. More than Majesty” already means that anyone who is interested, or might be interested, picks up the book. The queen in a brown plaid outfit, happily looking into the camera, walks towards the reader. The name Máxima is embossed on the book in large gold-colored letters, the subtitle in white. On the back is a short summary with a photo of the author. When opening the book, the first two blue pages with the monogram of Máxima immediately catch the eye. Anyone who starts to flip will see colored pages and many photos with a modern, sleek layout. It is always nice when a book has a clear table of contents. In the back, the reader will find the sources, a short timeline, the author’s word of thanks and the photo credit. The book is divided into a prologue, 19 chapters and an epilogue.

A revealing portrait of our queen, it says on the back in large letters. You shouldn’t think of details about the private life of Máxima and her family, that the Queen rather prefers to keep private, although the book does try to lift a tiny tip of the veil regarding her relationship with foreign royals. Rick Evers has mainly studied the work of Queen Máxima. What exactly is her function as the wife of the head of state, what are her duties, how much influence does she have, who does she work with? But also: what are her interests, why does she focus on certain themes? How do her childhood experiences and her career in banking affect her current job before her marriage?

Is Máxima’s life really determined by protocol and ceremony? Rick Evers has discovered that that is certainly not the case. She has made it her job to use her former career and interests for the Netherlands and the world, and her title naturally helps. The book is a comprehensive portrait of the working queen, her planning, the thorough preparation of the visits in her overcrowded schedule. There is hardly any room for themes other than those she has been involved with over the past 20 years: music, education, finances, health, vulnerable people, among others. It is not enough for Máxima to show her face. She goes well beyond her official position, although much of the work remains hidden behind the scenes. The organizations with which she is most involved notice that Máxima not only comes by, but also helps with problems, comes up with ideas, uses her network. With her enthusiasm she ignites people, both in front of and behind the scenes.

Several themes are discussed, such as her relationship with her native Argentina, her relationship with the Caribbean part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and her most important collaborators. Rick Evers also writes about the collaboration with Willem-Alexander and how Máxima combines her work with her family. However, it is also reported to what extent Máxima is involved in preparations for state banquets, and what her relationship is with her fashion designers. The function of the three official palaces – Huis ten Bosch, Noordeinde and the Royal Palace in Amsterdam – is also explained.

Those who would like to know more about Queen Máxima’s work would do well to read “Máxima. More than Majesty”. Unfortunately, the book is currently only available in Dutch. Many royalty fans abroad would certainly be interested in discovering more about Máxima’s work. But who knows, there may be a translation in the future.

There are always new goals and dreams, also for Máxima herself, she told Rick Evers. We would like to be surprised in the future, Your Majesty!
