The royal connection of this building

Anyone who recognises this building is either a longtime royalty watcher or a huge fan of Crown Princess Mary of Denmark. During my last visit to Copenhagen I was nearby and decided to continue my walk after visiting the Little Mermaid to have a quick look. To my surprise I recognised the building immediately, so it must have stuck somewhere in my head.

Mary Donaldson visited Denmark apparently for the first time in January 2002, over a year after meeting Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark during the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, in September 2000. In February 2002 it was confirmed she spent a weekend in the apartment of Frederik at Amalienborg. In the months afterwards she was seen in Denmark several times.

It was in August 2002 when Mary moved into apartment 3. sal 4 in a, likely very pricey, apartment building at the Langelinie Alle in Copenhagen, not far from Amalienborg, and with view on the waterfront. A month later she started a new job at Microsoft in Vedbæk, Denmark. Frederik and Mary continued to attend private occasions together.

On 8 October 2003 the engagement of the couple was announced, the wedding took place on 14 May 2004 … and the rest is history. After the engagement she gave up her apartment, but as you can see on the picture, the building is still there. Although it won’t say M. Donaldson at the letter box anymore as back in those days. By the way it seems to be the second building, and she lived on the third floor.
