The country

The emirate is known as Emirate of Dubai. The country is being reigned by the Al Maktoum dynasty.

The area of what is now Dubai first knew human settlement around 3000 BC. The first inhabitants were nomadic cattle herders. In the 3rd century the Sassanid Empire took control over the area. In the 7th century the Umayyad Caliphate gained power and introduced the Islam. Only in 1833 Dubai became a separate Sheikhdom under the Al Maktoum dynasty. In 1971 the emirate became part of the United Arab Emirates.

Sovereign

The current sovereign is Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Emir of Dubai. He was born in Shindagha, Dubai, on 15 July 1949.

He is the third son of Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Emir of Dubai (1912-1990) and Sheikha Latifa.

Enthronement

Sheikh Mohammed succeeded his brother Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum as Emir after his death on 4 January 2006. He was elected the vice-president of the United Arab Emirates on 5 January 2006. He had been the Crown Prince of Dubai since 3 January 1995.

Marriage and descendants

Sheikh Mohammed has a senior wife and several ex-wives. As several daughters bear the same name, it is not always clear who is who. His senior wife is Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum bin Juma Al Maktoum of Dubai (born 1962), whom he married in 1979.

Their children:

  • Sheikha Hessa (born 1980). She married in 2008 Sheikh Saeed bin Dalmouk bin Juma Al Maktoum and has issue: one son, Sheikh Rashid (born 2012) and two daughters, Sheikha Hind (born 2009) and Sheikha Salama (born 2018).
  • Sheikh Rashid (1981-2015). He had one son, Mohammed (born 2003).
  • Sheikh Hamdan (born 1982)
  • Sheikh Maktoum (born 1983). He is married since 2019 to Maryam bint Butti Al Maktoum. They have three daughters, Sheikha Hind (born 2020), Sheikha Latifa (born 2022) and Sheikha Shaikha (born 2023).
  • Sheikh Ahmed (born 1987). He is married since 2019 to Madiyah Bint Dalmook Al Maktoum. They have one daughter, Sheikha Hind (born 2022).
  • Sheikh Saeed (born 1988)
  • Sheikha Latifa III (1989). She married in 2009 Crown Prince Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi of Fujairah and has issue.
  • Sheikha Maryam II (born 1992). She in 2019 married Sheikh Khaled bin Mohammed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan of Abu Dhabi. They have three sons, Sheikh Mohammed (born 2020), Sheikh Hamdan (born 2012) and Sheikh Khalifa (born 2022).
  • Sheikha Sheikha (born 1992). She married in 2009 Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain and has issue.
  • Sheikha Futtaim (born 1994)
  • Sheikha Salamah (born 1999)
  • Sheikha Shamma (born 2001)

In 2004 he married Princess Haya bint Al Hussein of Jordan (born 1974). They got divorced in 2019.

Their children:

  • Sheikha Al Jalila (born 2007)
  • Sheikh Zayed (born 2012)

By Sheikha Delila Aloula from Lebanon, he has further issue:

  • Sheikha Latifa I (born 1983). She is married since 2016 to Sheikh Faisal bin Saud bin Khalid Al Qassimi of Ras Al Khaimah. They have issue, two sons, Sheikh Mohammed (born 2018) and Sheikh Hamdan (born 2021), and two daughters, Sheikha Shaikha (born 2020) and Sheikha Hind (born 2023).
  • Sheikha Maryam I (born 1987). She married in 2018 Sheikh Suhail bin Ahmed bin Juma Al Maktoum. They have issue, three daughters, Sheikha Fatima (born 2019), Sheikha Latifa (born 2022) and Sheikha Hessa (born 2024), and one son, Sheikh Ahmed (born 2020).

By Sheikha Houria Ahmed Lamara from Algeria he has further issue:

  • Sheikha Maitha (born 1980)
  • Sheikha Shamsa (born 1981)
  • Sheikha Latifa II (born 1985)
  • Sheikh Majid (born 1987). He married Hessa Beljafla in 2014. The couple has three sons Sheikh Mohammed (born 2015, twin), Sheikh Rashid (born 2019) and Sheikh Maktoum (born 2022), and two daughters, Sheikha Dubai (born 2015, twin) and Sheikha Maitha (born 2017).
  • Sheikh Mansour (born 1989)

By Sheikha Randa bint Mohammed Al-Banna, whom he married in 1972 (divorced) he has further issue:

  • Sheikha Manal (born 1977). She is married since 2005 to Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan of Abu Dhabi and has issue, three sons, Sheikh Mohammed (born 2007), Sheikh Hamdan (born 2011) and Sheikh Rashid (born 2017), and two daughters, Sheikha Fatima (born 2006) and Sheikha Latifa (born 2014).

By Zoe Grigorakos, originally from Greece, Sheikh Mohammed has further issue:

  • Sheikha Mahra (born 1994), previously called Christina. SHe is married since 2023 to Sheikh Mana bin Mohammed bin Rashid bin Mana Al Maktoum.

By an unknown woman, possibly from Germany, he has further issue:

  • Sheikh Marwan (born 1981). He is married to Dalal Al Marzouqi and has issue, two sons, Sheikh Mohammed and Sheikh Rashid (born 2013).

Heir to the throne

The heir to the throne is Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, nicknamed “Fazza”. He was born on 14 November 1982. He is Crown Prince of Dubai since 1 February 2008.

He is a son of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Emir of Dubai and his senior wife Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum bin Juma Al Maktoum of Dubai.

The Crown Prince became engaged to Sheikha Sheikha bint Saeed bin Thani Al Maktoum of Dubai in December 2008. However the engagement was cancelled in 2010. They finally got married in 2019.

    1. I honestly have no idea, although I am sure there will be a connection. The family trees in Arab countries are not well known I think and as they usually have several wifes and a lot of children …
