Polterabend – pre-celebration of Ludwig and Sophie’s wedding

With a handful of interesting weddings in noble and royal circles on Saturday 20 May 2023 the wedding season has now really started. One of the these weddings was the one of Prince Ludwig of Bavaria – future head of the royal family – and Sophie-Alexandra Evekink in München (Munich), Germany.

The bridal couple already held their Polterabend – a German wedding custom in which the guests break porcelain to bring luck to the couple’s marriage – in the family home of the groom: Kaltenberg Castle in Geltendorf near München. Around 300 guests were invited for the event. Many turned up in traditional costumes. They were welcomed by the groom’s parents Prince Luitpold and Princess Beatrix of Bavaria. The evening is traditionally held on the day before the wedding. In this case it was already celebrated on Thursday, 18 May 2023.

A friend of mine had a look and snapped a few photos for me.

A few photos in Bild.

More wedding photos to come. For their engagement announcement see here.
