The monarchs: How royal are they? – Great Britain

Recently we had an interesting discussion on Twitter about the royal ancestry of our royals. How royal is their background? The biggest question is: what is royalty? Most genealogists would settle on (non-)reigning royal families.

I thought it would be interesting to post the ancestors of the present monarchs back to their great-great-grandparents, that most of the time takes us back to around 1800. I start with the longest reigning one, Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip. The Queen surprisingly doesn’t have that much royal ancestors, due to the fact that her mother came from a noble family. Much more royal is the ancestry of her husband Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, whose great-great-grandparents are almost all royal, except for two.
