In May 2020 the book “The Habsburgs The Rise and Fall of a World Power” (can also be found as “The Habsburgs. To Rule the World”) by Martyn Rady was published. More than 400 pages of which the first 25 can be seen here. Almost at the same time, in June 2020 the Dutch version of his previous book “Het rijk van de Habsburgers. Een duizendjarig vorstengeslacht” (The Habsburg Empire. A very short introduction) with just over 200 pages was published, as well as a translation of his new book if I am correct: “De Habsburgers. De opkomst en ondergang van een wereldmacht” (Publisher: Het Spectrum).

I recently received the book “The Habsburg Empire. A very short introduction” in Dutch, that was published by Uitgeverij Omniboek. If you don’t want to read the more extensive history about the family, but are quite curious about the topic, this introduction can be recommended. Don’t expect an enormous amount of information about the family. It is mainly about their politics, their empire, that never has been a real unity and in which ethnical differences were sometimes huge.
Recentelijk ontving ik het boek “Het rijk van de Habsburgers. Een duizendjarig vorstengeslacht” van de uitgever, Uitgeverij Omniboek. Als je de meer uitgebreide geschiedenis over de familie niet wilt lezen, maar wel nieuwsgierig bent naar het onderwerp, is deze introductie aan te bevelen. Verwacht geen lading aan informatie over de familie. Het gaat vooral over hun politiek, hun rijk, dat nooit een echte eenheid heeft gevormd en waarin de ethnische verschillen soms zeer groot waren.
What immediately catches the eye when looking into the book are the huge amount of illustrations, in colour. Maps, but also photos, although these last ones are sometimes printed a bit too dark to my opinion. There is a good register and bibliography. And furthermore it was printed on organic paper.
Wat onmiddelijk opvalt als je het boek bekijkt, is de grote hoeveelheid illustraties, in kleur. Kaarten, maar ook foto’s, hoewel deze laatsten soms iets te donker zijn afgedrukt naar mijn smaak. Er is een goed register en een lijst van bronnen. Ook is het boek gedrukt op papier waarvan het zeker is dat de productie niet tot bosvernietiging heeft geleid.
Especially in the beginning there are a lot of names. A somewhat more extensive family tree would have been handy. About the Habsburgs before the 16th century Martyn Rady is short, although very fitting it says somewhere at the end “from Muri to Muri”. The main part of the book, five of the seven chapters, covers the period afterwards, and from that about 25% the 19th and 20th centuries. Although not overly detailed, the book gives a good overview of how the Habsburg Empire in the end failed. You would almost wonder how they have managed to survive that long.
Vooral in het begint duizelt het namen. Een iets uitgebreidere stamboom was wat dat betreft wel handig geweest. Over de Habsburgers voorafgaand aan de 16de eeuw blijft Martyn Rady kort, al wordt er aan het eind toepasselijk gesproken van “van Muri naar Muri”. Het grootste deel van het boek, vijf van de zeven hoofdstukken, beslaat de periode erna, en daarvan zo’n 25% de 19de en 20ste eeuw. Hoewel niet zeer gedetailleerd, geeft het boek een goed beeld van hoe het Habsburgse Rijk uiteindelijk mislukte. Je zou je bijna afvragen hoe ze het toch nog zolang hebben volgehouden.
