As early as January 2017, Uitgeverij De Bezige Bij announced that the Dutch cultural historian and economist Marcia Luyten would write a biography about Queen Máxima of the Netherlands. The book was intended to be in stores before the Queen’s 50th birthday on May 17, 2021. The first part of the biography “Máxima Zorreguieta, Motherland” appeared on April 22, 2021. A second part about Máxima’s life as queen, “Fatherland”, is expected later on.

In Máxima Zorreguieta.

Máxima Zorreguieta’s free life in New York is over when she is mentioned in the newspaper on August 31, 1999 as the girlfriend of the Dutch crown prince. History teaches us that if you marry a monarch, you will not have an easy life. What makes this Argentinian flourish at an old European royal court?
Queen Máxima was born fifty years ago in a country in decline. Argentina had missed its great future and fled in nostalgia. The Argentine tragedy invades the family when her father joins the military government. What was taken for granted in Máxima’s youth will leave deep marks in her later life. In Máxima Zorreguieta. Motherland, the first book of a biographical portrait in two parts, Marcia Luyten shows how Queen Máxima was shaped by her native country. Because of the great history of a country that dreamed of glory, and the smaller history of a family relationship, high expectations and unconditional friendship. Máxima ventures the crossing from Buenos Aires to Wall Street and the jet set from Manhattan, but only after a personal battle has been fought.

The first part of the biography, which has now been published, is about the Argentinian and New York years of Máxima Zorreguieta, from her birth in 1971 to 1999, the year in which she met the Dutch heir to the throne Willem-Alexander, The Prince of Orange. It ends with the prediction of a friend of Máxima who lays tarot cards that she will soon meet a man, a great love, for which she will have to sign a contract.

During her birthday interview on Dutch television on May 17, 2021, Queen Máxima herself said that she has not read the book, because she does not like to read about herself. She also confirmed that people who know her have spoken to the author, as well as confirming the story of the tarot cards. Marcia Luyten says she is happy that Máxima has confirmed these things.

Onmisbaar!

A youth photo of Queen Máxima was chosen for the cover, a girl in which the now 50-year-old can still be recognized. At the start of the book is a family tree, which I myself as a genealogist do not really find fantastic. Small print, lots of fringes, but at least a family tree. In addition, there are also maps of Argentina and Buenos Aires with the main places mentioned in the book. Here too I appreciate the effort, but they are not clear enough for me. At the back of the book there is a bibliography, the notes and a register of names. Indispensable!

The book is indeed a biographical portrait rather than a biography. Facts about the life of the young Máxima are interspersed with the history of Argentina and the history of the Zorreguieta and Cerruti families. It paints a good picture of the country where she grew up. Readers also get to know Máxima’s background better and it appears that she came from the better circles of Buenos Aires and was not just an ordinary citizen girl.

The reader does not really learn very much about the first years of Máxima’s life, although it is quite clear what the Videla regime has meant for her and her family. Her current life appears to have more in common with her royal life than thought. Only when Máxima is a teenager more information about her becomes known and people read about her school life, hobbies, upbringing, boyfriends, her career in New York. They also get to know her friends, and how important they are to this day. The reader also discovers how much influence political events in Argentina have had on the choices in Máxima’s life. All in all, it is a book that is interesting and easy to read. Personally, I like a little more chronology myself, but it was not disturbing.

I was able to discover two small mistakes. Jorge Zorreguieta, Máxima’s father (deceased in 2017), was born on January 18, 1928, not on January 28, 1928. An error that can also be found regularly on the Internet. The 18th appears to be correct. A journalist from Shownieuws says on the internet that he congratulated Máxima on the birthday of her father on January 28, 2016, and she said that it had been a while ago. On page 54, Máxima’s paternal grandmother is once called Ceci, instead of Chechi.
