Any royal postcard collectors among my visitors? I just have a small collection of cards, either with royals (old and new) or palaces/castles on it. My mother gave me these postcards recently, likely dating from the 1950s to the 1970s.
The first black-white postcard shows the castles of King Ludwig II of Bavaria. The poststamps on the back are dating back to 1954, but I can’t read the date on the stamp. The castles shown are of course Neuschwanstein, Herrenchiemsee, Linderhof, Berg and Hohenschwangau.
The second one is the castle of Schaumburg an der Lahn, also in Germany. After 1557 the House Leiningen-Westerburg-Schaumburg resided here, 1656 it was sold to Agnes von Effern, widow of Count Peter Melander von Holzappel, and afterwards was inherited by the House Nassau-Dillenburg, and later on by the families Anhalt-Bernburg-Schaumburg and the Imperial family of Austria. 1867 Duke Georg Ludwig of Oldenburg inherited the castle from Archduke Stephan of Austria. In 1888 it came into the possession of Fürst Georg Viktor zu Waldeck und Pyrmont. Fürst Wittekind in 1983 sold the castle.
The two coloured cards should look familiar. The one on the left is Bückeburg Palace, still owned by the Fürsten zu Schaumburg-Lippe. I think the palace still sells similar postcards, but of course with a much better picture quality.
And of course the last one is the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, Austria. One of the palaces I’d say you must have seen once in your life when you’re a royalty-watcher.
